![]() Pillans, the well-known Cape botanist who first collected it at Cornell's Kop in the Richtersveld. The species was named by South African botanist Louise Guthrie (1879-1966) in 1928 to honor Neville S. Aloe is derived from the Arabic, `Alloch' and translated as `Allal' in Greek and Hebrew, literally meaning bitter or bitter sap, referring to aloe sap. The genus name Aloidendron is a combination of Aloe and dendron - the latter referring to their tree like habit. Flowering starts from late spring in late September and the spherical capsules that ripen from December split open into three parts to release the papery seeds that are dispersed by wind. ![]() The racemes are up to 150mm long and carry up to 30 yellow flowers at a time. ramosissimum which carry their inflorescences in an erect fashion above the top of the leaf rosettes. The inflorescence that develops from in-between the lowest leaves hangs down separating it from A. pillansii is approximately 0.5m long which spreads out somewhat horizontally carrying the upward turning racemes of up to 50 branches. The two aloes also flower at different times of the year. dichotomomum has narrower, darker leaves and upright inflorescences. dichotomomumthough the former has broader and paler leaves with pendant yellow flowers while A. Leaf margins have small white teeth of 1-2mm long and 5-8mm apart. Young leaves have a glaucous appearance which is also quite distinctive in comparison to closely-related species. Leaves are densely rosulate (arranged in a rosette), curved, lance-shaped and tapering gradually, 500-600×100-120mm, and grey-green to brownish-green having a smooth surface above and below. The bark at the base is a yellowish to brownish golden colour and peels away as the plant gets older leaving sharp edges along the lower half of the stem. The stem is covered with a white powdery substance which is particularly visible in younger specimens. Stems in old specimens have swollen bottle-shaped trunks that support the tall branches. The few to many branches are smooth, erect or slightly divergent. Trees reach a stem height of 10m or more and a stem diameter ranging from 1-2m at the base narrowing to about 0.2m at the tip.Ĭharacteristically, these trees branch dichotomously (forking regularly into two equal branches) from approximately midway up the length of the stem. From afar, they take the appearance of mysterious kings guarding the barren desert landscape and on close inspection their beautifully fissured golden bark, white pillar-like stems and pale green leaf crowns reveal a beauty that can only be appreciated in its natural habitat. Aloidendron pillansii is a succulent tree that is impressively sculptured by time and the elements of the desert.

![]() For best success, set the forced air incubator thermostat at 99 to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit and 60% relative humidity. Both are very similar in function and design, with the exception that the forced air incubator has a fan that circulates air over the eggs. Either one can result in a successful hatch, as long as care is taken to make sure temperature and humidity are consistent. There are two basic types of incubator, forced air and still air. Using too concentrated a solution can hurt the embryos if the solution is drawn into the egg. Use a solution that is specifically formulated for washing eggs, and then be sure to follow the directions exactly. ![]() If the egg is warmer, it will tend to contract as the water cools it which risks drawing contaminants in through the shell. Remember that if you wash the eggs, you are also washing off their protective outer coating, making the shell more permeable. ![]() Don’t submerge them or soak them, but use a damp sponge or cloth. ![]() Gently wipe off eggs if they are a little bit dirty. Gather eggs frequently to give fewer opportunities for damage to occur to the egg, and less exposure to bacteria and dirt. Therefore, keeping the nest box clean is of utmost importance when you know you are going to be incubating and hatching eggs. Immediately after being laid, the cuticle is moist, and if it comes in contact with dirt or other contaminants while still moist, those contaminants can be drawn into the egg. When the egg is laid, a protective cuticle is created around it. These chicks often do not survive hatching, and even if they do, they often die shortly after. If humidity is too low and too much moisture leaves the egg, this can result in an overly large air cell, and chicks that are weak and adhered to the shell. If the air cell is too small the chick is often unable to pip internally and cannot complete the hatch process. When a chick begins to hatch, he breaks, or ‘internally pips’ through the membranes surrounding him into that air cell, and takes his first real breath there. This results in a small air cell (the pocket of air in the large end of the egg). When the humidity is too high, not enough water can leave the egg. The volume of water lost in the egg via evaporation is replaced by air. Cross section illustration of bird embryo inside egg. This is why keeping humidity at the proper level during incubation is so critical, no matter what type of incubator you are using. So the comparatively high temperatures in the incubator are a perfect place for evaporation to occur. Higher temperatures increase the rate at which evaporation occurs. Moisture will move from an area of higher concentration, such as the contents of the egg, to an area of lesser concentration, the air surrounding it. Pores in the shell allow for the exchange of gases as the embryo develops, and also for the exchange of moisture between the embryo and the air in the incubator itself.Įvaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas. But did you know that long before that egg you are about to put into your incubator becomes a fluffy, feathered chick, it is still a living, breathing organism? Incubator Evaporation We all know that temperature and humidity are critical for a successful incubation and hatch. More complex incubator systems have sensors that can register humidity levels and add water accordingly. Even the simplest incubators have thermostats, and reservoirs for water. Effortless Modern Incubatorsįortunately, modern incubators take much of the guesswork out of incubation, maintaining consistent temperature and humidity pretty effortlessly, with a little good management. There must have been a lot of guesswork and trial and error involved in a successful hatch, and success rates were hopefully high enough to make the effort worthwhile. Humidity was provided by moistened jute placed near and over the eggs. Temperature and ventilation were regulated by opening doors and vents to let smoke out and light in. Mud brick buildings, divided into chambers that were basically large ovens, were heated by burning straw, dung or charcoal. Historical records show that incubation of eggs was practiced in Ancient Egypt.
